Key Issues for Women in West Clare:

Lack of flexible/part-time work for women who are trying to accommodate family commitments and employment outside the home.

Lack of part-time training opportunities for women who are trying to accommodate family commitments and training outside the home.

The lack of recognition for unpaid work in the home, caring for children and people with disabilities or chronic illness.  Women working in the home comprise the largest single 'workforce' in the country, but their voice is virtually silent.

During the consultation in 2000, 0% of women that were unemployed wished to start their own business.

Men dominate decision-making structures in West Clare, the County, regionally and nationally.  Men manage almost all social, economic, political, and spiritual structures in the area.  There is only one female County Councillor out of seven in our electoral area.  There are only two female County Councillors out of 32 for the county.  There are only two female Town Councillors on Kilrush Town Council out of nine.

Domestic violence and psychological abuse is an issue that has traditionally been covered up in rural areas and is a major concern to EIRI because of the physical isolation of many women in West Clare.  It is certain that a significant number of women and children in West Clare are living in abusive situations and at serious risk.
